The city: Join Me society - Join the Karma Army!
Douglas writes "The Karma Army is on the march in Edinburgh! Basically we're a collective (note: not a cult) of people all over the world who do good deeds on Fridays (Good Fridays). We also get together most weeks, whence alcohol is consumed. If this sounds like something you'd like to be involved in, e-mail s0342646@sms.ed.ac.uk, or go to www.join-me.co.uk for more info!"

Wanted: Looking for mothers and babies to volunteer
nikip writes "I am a phd student, studying infant communication. I am looking for mothers with babies aged 5-6 months, or 9-10 months, who would be willing to volunteer to take part in a study on how infants react to changes in the mothers voice.
Volunteers would be required to come into the Psychology Department (don't worry - you won't be judged or analysed in any way!). They would be filmed saying a rhyme to their baby in different ways. They would receive £5 to cover expenses and an A4 photograph of their baby. Please contact niki.powers@ed.ac.uk, or phone 650 3436 and leave a message if you would like more info, or would like to volunteer."

DNA spit kits for traffic wardens
Anonymous writes "Traffic wardens in Edinburgh are to be issued with DNA kits in an effort to track down people who spit at them.
Police said the action followed two incidents in which wardens were spat in the face. One of the attackers was a pedestrian, the other a cyclist.
All 65 wardens will be able to use the kits to collect samples of spittle which can be taken away for analysis.
Inspector David Legge, of Lothian and Borders Police, said the force would make full use of the technology.
"Even just the thought of being spat upon will sicken and repel most people and nobody should have to work with the fear of this happening to them," he went on. "

Snapfax: still cutting corners
Anonymous writes "THE STUDENT discount promotional company Snapfax is still mistreating its staff, many of whom are undergraduates, despite being previously exposed by Student in November 2001.
The Edinburgh-based company, which publishes wallets of student discounts each year for cities nationwide, has been refused advertisement with the Student Employment Service (SES) since 2001 and has been repeatedly criticised by EUSA.
Student has learned that it has taken Snapfax several months to pay staff for work they did in the autumn, and some have still not received full payment although their employment finished last year.
Staff members employed during last autumn have also told Student of poor conditions in the makeshift factory where the discount wallets were produced, with no central heating turned on while they worked and one saying there was “filth everywhere.”
