Bert's Bar (tel 225 5748, 29-31 William St). A classic re-creation of a 1930s-style pub - complete with ajar of pickled eggs on the bar - Bert's is a good place to sample real ale and down-to-earth pub grub such as Scotch pies and bangers and mash.
Ryan's (tel 226 6669, 2 Hope St). Housed in a former fruit market, Ryan's has retained its original vaulted ceiling but is best known as a loud and lively bar where New Town office workers gather for a drink at the end of the day. In summer there are outdoor tables and good food is served all day.
Indigo Yard (tel 220 5603, 7 Charlotte Lane). Set around an airy, glass-roofed courtyard, Indigo is a tres fashionable West End watering hole that has been patronised by the likes of Liam Gallagher, Pierce Brosnan and Kylie Minogue. Good food - including open-air barbecues in summer - just adds to the attraction.
