Clark's Bar (tel 556 1067, 142 Dundas St). A century old and still going strong, Clark's caters to a clientele of real-ale aficionados and regulars, who appreciate an old-fashioned, no frills pub.
The Cumberland Bar (tel 558 3134, 1-3 Cumberland St). Under the same management as the Bow Bar in Victoria St, the Cumberland pays the same attention to serving well-looked-after, cask-conditioned ales. Though relatively new, the bar has an authentic, traditional wood-brass-and-mirrors look and there's a nice little beer garden outside.
Kay's Bar (tel 225 1858, 39 Jamaica St). Housed in a former wine-merchant's office, tiny Kay's Bar is a cosy haven with a coal fire and a fine range of real ales. Good food is served in the back room at lunchtime but you'll have to book a table - Kay's is a popular spot.
The Basement (tel 557 0097, 10a Broughton St). With a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, this is one of Broughton St's most popular bars. Music in the evenings includes hip hop, house and funk.
Mathers (tel 556 6754, 25 Broughton St). Mathers is the 40-something generation's equivalent of the 20-something's Basement bar across the street - a friendly, relaxed pub with Edwardian decor serving real ales and good pub grub.
The Cask & Barrel (tel 556 3132, 115 Broughton St). At the foot of Broughton St, the Cask is a beer-drinker's delight, with a selection of up to ten real ales, as well as Czech and German beers.
