The Athens Olympics will be given the green light by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday, BBC Five Live has learned.
The IOC's final inspection of the city's facilities before the Games, which start on 13 August, has concluded that all of the venues will be ready.
At a news conference on Wednesday, the IOC will congratulate the city.
The inspection team will also state the challenge is now to move from the construction to operational phase.
British Olympic Association chairman Craig Reedie, who is a member of the IOC Co-ordination Commission, which has been monitoring Athens' progress, said that the venues would be ready.
"I am certain the Games will open on time and with good venues on that date (13 August)," he said. "The venues are coming together rather nicely."
But he added that Athens organisers still face a big challenge.
"Having completed the venues, the Olympic overlays have got to go into it - all the technical work has to be done, and the move from a construction organisation into an operational organisation," he said.
"Sometimes that takes a bit of doing as well."
