Uni proxy

Just setup edin uni as being the proxy for my computer at home, so I can view journal sites etc.

Just how much can the uni see while I do this? So I know how carful to be while it's setup.

To be honest I don't really know as the network stuff is outwith my remit.

I can't see any problem as resnet and home dialup accounts use the edi uni proxy and if it's working for you I doubt there will be any complications. Just carry on and stop if theres a problem.

In the meantime I will see if I can get a better answer from those in the know.

Yeah, but if for example I'm downloading a TV episode (not entirley legal), but want to look at a journal and need to activate the proxy, will I have to turn the download off?

I was wondering if the uni will go spare at me passing this stuff via there systems?

Just asking so I know if I have to turn downloads off when I'm looking at uni related stuff.

i don't think your downloads pass through the proxy. Is just the browsing that goes through it.

If you set it up to use the proxy, everything you do on the web or through Internet Explorer will go through it.

if you're downloading something (from a browser, bit torrent or whatever) then want to look at a journal, then if you open a new instance of your browser, change it to go through the proxy, then only things done in that browser should go through the proxy, i'm pretty sure.

This is different from the EdLAN VPN, where all your internet would go through the VPN; web, downloads, IRC, MSN, the lot...

But yeah, logically it should only effect the browser. I would have thought.

However, I thought back at how when I had dial up all the ISP info goes into the browser and thats how the connection is established initally, via that info (and thats also where proxy info is). Maybe I have a warped memory of how it used to be... Razz

heh, yeh it did work like that, although I have the feeling that was maybe just windows/IE working together? So that you can configure your internet through the browser?

yeah, that wasn't the only way to turn your internet on - I bet that was just to make it "simple".

its only a web cache so i'm pretty sure it'll only deal with the http protocol - i.e. stuff done through a web browser. so if you're using bit torrent, ftp, email (non web based) or pretty much anything else on the internet you'll not be using the uni's proxy.

Mmk, checked with some fella's at work and they say to stay away from using the proxy. Basically your movements are being logged so if its journals its fine, if its pron/downloads/etc its dodgy.

does anyone know the difference between the "automatic configuration script" and "manual configuration" other than just what you type in the boxes?

I use the proxy but only when I need to view certain secure .ed.ac.uk sites. I switch it off when not using that. I'm assuming its pretty similar to just using the comp labs at the uni?

basically the script just configures everything for you. It also means that if the Uni need to change the machine or port number or something, then the script will be updated and any changes should be seemless. Hopefully...
