Hi there. I am a second year Spanish student at the University of Edinburgh and next year as part of my MA I have to spend the year in Spain. The thing is, I want to work for my year and there's not an awful lot I can do as my Spanish isn't yet brilliant. I wanted to go and work as a receptionist in a hotel but I was told this wouldn't be approved as this would not involve writing. I was wondering if there were any fourth year students who spent last year abroad who could let me know how much they check into what we do i.e. could I tell them I'm doing something and then really do whatever I want instead? Any info would be appreciated.

So let me get this straight, you want to work during your 3rd year in Spain so that you can improve your Spanish? I mean, if you just go to Uni in Spain, you'll definitely improve it, and by a lot, so why work?
Because if I go to study I think I'll end up out of my depth language-wise and knowing me i'll just end up not going, wasting the money I will have paid for fees. Also I will have to do course work for the Spanish uni, course work for edinburgh too and I'll still need to make money to live from somewhere as well. And despite what everyone says, work is better than studying anyway! Think about it, when you study you spend all day in uni and then you go home and you still have to study and then you have to work at the weekend just to live. When you work, OK, you have a yucky day at work but then you go home and you can just do whatever you want. I think it sounds better, kind of take a year off before the horrors of fourth year begin!

So why do you even go to Uni to begin with? It's supposed to be something you want / like to do...? I'm just saying, going to Uni in Spain, even if you don't do any of the work, will improve your Spanish. And then working to get money to live, the country is waaaay cheaper than the UK, probably with what you pay just for rent here you can live for a month there, so don't stress your year with work, go and enjoy the culture!!
