Just curious... Please state aswell, as most options give more than one choice.
Cheers

bittorrent for big stuff (ie. films software [all legal of course ] and kazzalite for individual mp3s, I'm not a big fan of downloading whole albums, if I like a band I prefer to go out and buy the album, where ever possible from the band themselves... |

only 2 of us have voted
ftp servers most of the time (if you can get them!), if theres something more specific i'll maybe go hunting on bit torrent or for a specific song I used to use kazaa lite but i've not got that installed (since I formatted).
you never mentioned IRC .... if anyone still uses that? _________________

| Kazaa lite and bittorrent. If I can find a good reliable FTP, then I'll go for that too. I think edonkey's network doesn't have as much to offer as the other downloaders. |

My opinion on the options above:
edonkey network is the only way to get old stuff.
Kazaa lite good for single mp3s.
DC/FTPs/IRC the best way to get new stuff if you know the right people.
Bittorrent is the best way to get newer stuff without needing to know the right people. |

I know very little about edonkey and DC but I agree. _________________

For IRC downloads try www.ircspy.com or www.packetnews.com
It's remarkably easy to find what you are after and with the channel bots all you need to do is wait in the IRC channel. Perfect for a broadband home user.
Bittorrent is getting bigger all the time, more companies than ever are using it to distribute their files, for example Blizzard have been using it to distribute their World of Warcraft beta's with great success. The are an increasing number of Suprnova website clones springing up all over the place so its going to be around for a while yet.
Incidentally there are new 'undetectable' d/l clients in the pipeline so don't expect the d/l's to disappear anytime soon.
Just don't go using d/l clients in the Edinburgh Uni labs, they keep an eye on each persons connection stats and if flagged can come down very heavy on you. _________________ Nik - EUCS Print Services & Lab Supervisor |

rofl...
Anyone stoopid enough to use d/l clients on uni computers needs to be spanked.
As for IRC, yeah... I used to use it years and years ago, when it was one of the only ways to get certain files. P2P networks have kinda taken the challenge out of it now-a-days. |

Apparently Valve have employed Bram Cohen (I think that's his name - the creator of bit torrent) to help them get some good p2p stuff working with their steam software. _________________

I feel sorry for the fella coming in to help with Steam. It's totally bug ridden. Bring back 1.5 _________________ Nik - EUCS Print Services & Lab Supervisor |

Steam is the future *cough cough, choke.... die*
Took about 6 attempts to get that codename gordon 2D halflife game without the download just pausing indefinatly. Oh and it went through a period of 2 months of just not updating the steam software, just crashing at the same point every time.... until the next update finally worked.

I've never been a big fan of steam but it does have some nice features - HL on steam can be minimised and will work properlly when you alt and tab back. I've not got it installed though.
oh btw did you guys hear they've arrested the h4x0rz who stole the code? _________________

Steam does suck majorly, it's a shame that the very nice looking CS Source will only play on that *sighs*
Back on topic - I eMule primarily (I find it's faster for some stuff, plus you can source files from BitTorrent). To be honest, if I can find what I'm looking for, I'm not that worried about speed (except when I'm only getting 10k/s out of my 1meg connection, naming no names coughKAZAAcough).
Oh, and it's not actually that difficult to run P2P on uni computers without getting caught. You still shouldn't though, it's very bad. |
